Every dog breed has its own unique history, and most of the time, this history is glorious and one of a kind. One of the well loved breeds that dog owners want to have in their home is none other than the Tibetan Mastiff.
Before you get this dog breed for yourself and have them as a part of your family, here are some interesting facts about Tibetan Mastiff you would want to keep in mind.
Heaviest Breed Recorded So Far
Zorba, an English Mastiff, broke records in 2000 as the heaviest dog that was ever recorded. Zorba measured over 8 feet from the nose to the tail, weighing at an extremely heavy 343 pounds during that particular time of his life. At his 6th year, Zorba was also recorded as the world’s heaviest dog when he weighed just more than 314 pounds.
Bird Killer
Watch out for being the next most hated creatures of birds in your place because your Tibetan Mastiff happens to have a very special knack as far as bird chasing, catching and killing is concerned.
Popular Mastiff Owners
There are many celebrities who own a Mastff, including Michael Bay, George C. Scott, Gayle King, Kirstie Alley and Marlon Brando. Some well known musicians who also have Mastiffs are Jon Bon Jovi, Christina Aguilera, Flea and Bob Dylan. Alexander the Great, Kublai Khan and Hannibal are just some of the notable historical figures who are also proud Mastiff owners.
A Wise Old Man
Mastiffs are light footed dogs with deliberate and slow trot. Their eyes are like that of an old man that got all the world’s wisdom.
One was Aboard the Mayflower
You’re eyes are not playing tricks on you. Then 25-year-old John Goodman was aboard Mayflower when the ship arrived in America and he got his own English Mastiff tagging along with him.
No Dogs Mess with Mastiffs
Mastiffs are less aggressive to lesser dogs. You can expect them not to cause any trouble with the rest of your pets. For them, the rule is pretty basic. They will never bother you if you don’t bother them.
Not to Healthy Dogs, Though
Probably the biggest downside of this giant breed is that their life expectancy is a bit short. Typically, Mastiff’s have around 7 years of lifespan, and some live to around 10 years.
Different Types of Mastiffs
There are just too many types of Mastiffs to choose from including Brazilian Mastiff, Argentinian Mastiff, French Mastiff, Italian Mastiff, Pyrenean Mastiff, and so much more, with the Tibetan Mastiff being just one of them.
Daytime is Happy Time Indoors
It will make you think that Tibetan Mastiffs are dumb and lazy. But the truth is, they are just saving energy for the night. Their inherent trait is to patrol during the night.
They’ll Guard as if Their Life Depends on This
That teddy bear expression on a Tibetan Mastiff’s face is enough to make you fall for them but don’t get fooled as two of these dogs can take down even something as strong as a lion.
